Client Overview
Our client, Mr Fraser, a homeowner in Reading, wanted to upgrade his property with a durable, attractive, and functional block paving driveway. The existing gravel surface had become uneven and challenging to maintain, especially during wet weather. Mr. Fraser’s goal was to enhance the curb appeal of his home while ensuring the new driveway required minimal upkeep.
Project Scope
Mr. Fraser requested a block paving driveway that would:
Be aesthetically pleasing and complement his property’s architecture. Provide a smooth and sturdy surface for parking multiple vehicles. Include proper drainage to prevent water pooling.
Initial Consultation and Design
During our initial consultation, we discussed design options, material preferences, and budget considerations. After surveying the site, we recommended:
Material: High-quality concrete blocks in a charcoal colour with a light grey border for a sleek and modern look.
Layout: A herringbone pattern for the main area to maximise strength and durability.
Drainage: Installing a linear drainage system to comply with sustainable urban drainage regulations.
A digital mock-up of the design was shared with Mr. Fraser, who approved it before work began.
Installation Process
Preparation: Removed the existing gravel driveway.
Excavated to the appropriate depth (approximately 200mm) to ensure a stable foundation. Laid a geotextile membrane to prevent weed growth.
Sub-base Installation: Compacted a 150mm layer of Type 1 MOT hardcore for structural support. Added a 50mm layer of sharp sand and leveled it to provide a smooth base for the blocks.
Block Laying: Laid the paving blocks in a herringbone pattern, ensuring a tight fit for durability. Installed the contrasting grey border to frame the driveway.
Finishing Touches: Used kiln-dried sand to fill the joints, ensuring stability.
Compacted the surface with a plate compactor for a polished finish.
Installed a linear drainage channel at the driveway’s entrance to direct rainwater away from the house.
Outcome
The project was completed in five days, transforming the driveway into a stunning, low-maintenance feature. The combination of charcoal blocks and a light grey border provided a sophisticated look that greatly enhanced the home’s curb appeal. Mr. Fraser was particularly impressed with the smooth finish and the effectiveness of the drainage system during a recent downpour.
